Ponca City Public Schools WILL BE CLOSED ON FRIDAY, APRIL 13 FOR ALL STUDENTS.

It will be a work day for teachers and other classifications of employees to get ready for state testing and to make preparations for students to return to school on Monday, April 16.

NO SCHOOL TOMORROW THURSDAY, APRIL 12 DUE TO THE TEACHER WALKOUT.

NO SCHOOL WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11 DUE TO TEACHER WALKOUT.

Explanation of School Closure Days and Makeup Options
By law, Oklahoma students are to receive a minimum of 1,080 hours of instruction.  Students of Ponca City Public Schools attend more than the minimum number of hours.  Our district has 8 days built into the calendar in which school can be closed without having to make up instructional time for students.  If the teacher walkout continues more than 8 days, a change in the school year calendar will be required.  Some options we have are to add a specific number of minutes to days we are in session or extend days at the end of the school year to make up instructional time if we miss more than 8 days.  At this time, school will be in session April 30, a scheduled Professional Development Day, and May 14, a built in Snow Day if the walkout has ended.

Employees are contracted by school days.  The number of contracted days are 175, 185, and 203 depending on the position of the employee.  The employees will be required to make up missed contract days.

4/2/18 - Latest Information Regarding the Teacher Walkout from Superintendent

Our employees will be sent a daily survey at 3:00 PM and will close at 5:00 PM.  They will indicate on the survey if they will be advocating for education or if they will be in classroom on the following date.  I have encouraged our employees to be engaged in the survey process.  The determining factor on the decision to close school, or not, will be if we have enough staff at school to ensure the safety and supervision of our students.  As soon as the data is analyzed, information on the status of Tuesday, April 3, and future dates will be pushed through the PCPS Mobile App, posted on our district Facebook page and website, and sent to our local media outlets.   Whatever the decision, the Ponca City Public Schools Administration and Board of Education definitely support our teachers.

Many staff members are conflicted and want to both advocate AND be in the classroom for their current students.  The teachers’ decisions are not about the raise; they are making decisions to protect the future of Oklahoma education and for the best opportunities for your children.  Thank you to our community for the continued support, patience, and flexibility.  Together we are stronger!
